Abandoning Autumn
It is a truth universally acknowledged - and here I pray your indulgence, Miss Austen - that autumn in New England - at least in a good year - is the most beautiful of anywhere in all the boisterous sprawl that is America.
It has always been my favorite season, and not simply for the color Nature bestows on the foliage of almost everything that grows.
The air crisps with the subtle kiss of hayfields mown, rich brown loam digesting the petals of latesummer gardens and the surreptitious bonfires - illegal now - still set to burn the fallen leaves of maple, oak and ash.
Nights are clear, untroubled by clouds, and in the the sky the stars are scattered like so many diamonds spilled, careless, on a midnight blue blanket.
The moon, shapeshifter that she is, borrows a mask from her lover the sun and rises, roundly provocative, washing the world in the satisfaction of a woman fulfilled, limning the landscape with golddust.
I'll be missing most of it this year, though as I sweltered in summer's heat I dreamt of the river valley autumn.
No HDR landscapes, no nose tickle, no jewelled blanket, no goldkissed evenings for me this year.
I'm abandoning it - all of it, running with wide open arms to an unknown spring, eager to embrace this intriguing season that lures me with a voice all at once so foreign, yet so familiar. ~ copyright 2014 RC deWinter
