Change of Heart
It was almost twelve on that Saturday night, but when the walls started screaming I knew it was time to get dressed and go out. I threw on a presentable shirt, jeans that weren't paintstained and slipped into my semisexy black heels.
My hair was a mess - it always is - but I didn't care; the minute I sit at a bar I melt into the woodwork. I'm way past the acceptable shelflife in the marketplace of flesh; no man is looking for a squarejawed stubborn misfit who gives no quarter, and that's not why I was going anyway. I felt if I didn't escape from this coffin of a room I might never see another sunrise, and bourbon has a way of smoothing the rough edges off reality just enough to make sleep possible.
The street was uncharacteristically empty; when I got to the bar there was no one outside, but when I peeked in a window there was the usual crush of merrymakers, laughing and drinking and trying to forget the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. And then I quailed - what would be worse, to be the quiet island in a sea of mindless noise or face down the walls and sort out my soul in silence? That short walk fixed it for me. I put on my big girl pants, turned around and headed home. 2016 RC deWinter
