DescriptionCopyright 2016 RC deWinter ~ All Rights Reserved It was a soft spring night, misted in a veil as delicate as a young girl's kiss. I was desperate for sleep, but Morpheus played coy, racing round the room, taunting me, daring me to lay hands on his sweaty nakedness. I wasn't up for that game. I've had enough of unavailable men, figurative or real; instead, I went to the window to bathe myself in the lake of light that glowed through the fog. The street below was silent, no late-night revelers about as they so often are in this city known for its heady liquor, hot music and the promise of forbidden adventure.
There was, however, one car parked close by the curb across the street, The fog gave it a fairytale feel; I thought of Cinderella's coach and wondered, should I go down, if a mousewhiskered driver might appear to whisk me off to where I belonged, for I am not native to this city of extravagant manners, liquid speech and laissez-faire attitude about almost everything. I am here on sufferance; the neighbors call me Yankee lady and laugh at my bred-in-the-bone bluntness, my clipped consonants, and the speed with which I set about accomplishing the daily tasks of living. I don't mind; they are unfailingly kind and patient with my shortcomings.
I came here to change, to learn a new way of living, but it's not working. How foolish to think a different place makes a different you, because that old saw is true: wherever you go, there you are. And while I love the loose jangle of life here in the Big Easy, i never will be - easy, that is. That ramrod in my spine will never break. It might bend a bit, but I'll always be the same old me, burdened with old-fashioned expectations, obligations sitting heavy on my heart. But I'll stick around awhile longer anyhow, just so I can tell myself I tried.
