Clueless
The sun was shining when I trekked out to the lighthouse. It seemed a perfect summer's day; as I'd sipped my coffee in a small cafe they told me I had to see it, a kind of freshwater American Gothic, not to be missed - and who am I, a stranger in the middle of nowhere - to argue?
I was missing the sea, and though I knew there'd be no salt tang in the air, I also knew if I closed my eyes and breathed deeply enough I could magick it up; the lake is long and wide and deep - an ocean in miniature.
Lost in thought, wondering why I was here - so far out of the way of my chosen destination and then remembering Id turned north when I shouldn't have - too busy singing with the radio! - it wasn't until I was crossing the green expanse surrounding the venerable pride of this small town that I noticed it had suddenly grown chill.
Looking up, I saw an angry sky, no longer blue but bruised plumpurple-gray by a sudden squall blown in from who knows where.
I ran for it and made the doorway just as thick cold drops began to splat and realized I'd once again blundered on, heedless, not paying attention, and barely missed a good soaking.
And that's how I ended up here - in a small middle of nowhere inside a concentric ring of endless overlapping nowheres - always unaware of the coming storm. ~ copyright 2016 RC deWinter
A view of historic Two Harbors Lighthouse. First lit in 1892, it is the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on Minnesota's north shore, situated at Agate Bay on Lake Superior. It is privately owned and also now run as a bed and breakfast.
