In Saecula Saeculorum
I live in a house where the idiocy of the world is broadcast throughout the day into the evening for the entertainment of a woman who cannot hear a thing at normal volume, who counts the Lorna Doones when they are eaten. At first I wondered why no one complained about the racket from the open summer windows - for though the air is suffocating, thick with unshed rain, the air conditioner sits idle - she is never hot; then I remember this is a neighborhood of ancient women, past all but the killing of the clock. There is no peace, no sanctity of thought; the lives of plastic people never living anywhere but in hack writers' minds take precedence over the urgent truth of what affects us all. I sit outside no matter what the hour - in morning light, in bug-infested dusk. The deepest night is contemplation's only refuge; by then my mind, incapable of rest, whirls, spinning like a planet thrown from orbit. At sunrise, heavy-lidded, I am desperate, a Lazarus needing the resurrective touch of Jesus; I rise and dress in dawn's pale sullen light. The ocean calls. I answer it by walking the half-mile to its shore, and, standing in the blessed quiet there, re-arm to combat coming day's despair. ~ copyright 2015 RC deWinter
