DescriptionCopyright 2016 RC deWinter ~All Rights ReservedThe Choice You Made After that night at the lake I promised myself I'd never go back, and I never have - until tonight; even pain is better than feeling nothing, and I have been empty for too long.
It was a perfect night, just cool enough for a light jacket; the moon lit the path all the way out. Everything was perfect, just as I remembered. The water barely rippled as I let the memories wash back in; I could almost feel you standing next to me.
'Choose!' I'd said that night I was so in love with you I didn't know where I ended and you began 'Which is more beautiful, the lake or the sky?' 'I don't know,' you answered. 'They're both everything you are, beautiful and fluid, changeable, impossible to grasp.'
I was almost dizzy with happiness, but then you spoke again. 'But I have made a choice,' you said, 'a different one. I need something solid - someone solid. And I've found her.'
Your words electrocuted my tongue, and after that what was there to say? I bit my lip so hard I'm surprised it didn't bleed as we made our silent way back, because I'd be damned before I'd reproach or implore. Even then, as in love as I was, I had my pride. But I was glad for the darkness; there was no holding back the tears that burned my face.
And that was the end of our grand romance. You leaned down to kiss me goodbye but I stepped back, not wanting the lips that had told so many lies for so long touching my skin.
So here I am, reliving it all, because, dammit, I needed to feel. I needed to feel something. And I knew if I came here, I would.
I still wonder how you would've told me if I hadn't asked you to choose between the lake and the sky. Tonight, as I lie down with this welcome pain, I'll think on that as I try to sleep.
