Artist Statement Painting With Photos
Photography for me is a creative medium that goes beyond a single photo. I am fascinated how a photo collage can render a two dimensional subject into a three dimensional scene. My work has evolved through the last twenty years starting with pre-digital collage techniques. These techniques consisted of arranging and rearranging 4x7 prints, taping them in place and finally gluing them permanently to mat board. The final visual effect always energized me to start the next project as I continuously refined my style and techniques.
With the advent of digital technology all sorts of new creative avenues opened up for my art. I started experimenting with Photoshop to develop new techniques for assembling and finishes my photo collages. The front end of the technique is similar. I find a subject and take a couple hundred photos, experimenting with different angles, movement and depth of focus. Then instead of using prints, tape and glue I use Photoshop layers to digitally overlap, rotate and move each individual photo as I build up the collage.
Finishing off the collage with photo illustrative techniques is a step in the process that was not possible with film collages. The possibilities of creative manipulation are simply infinite and very exciting. The collages you are viewing combine all the original methods I developed through the years and all the new techniques I am exploring at present. I hope you enjoy viewing my work as much as I have enjoyed creating the pieces.
